Kickoff Event: Superior Court Judges Offer Lessons from their First Year on the Bench

Happy Hours are great, but isn't it time for a major gathering of past and present Superior Court Law Clerks? If you agree, please join us at our "2013-14 Kickoff Event: Superior Court Judges Offer Lessons from their First Year on the Bench," taking place on Tuesday, October 8, 2013, 5-7 pm, at the Boston Bar Association, 16 Beacon St., Boston, MA. Chief Justice Barbara J. Rouse will start the evening by sharing recent developments in the Superior Court. A distinguished panel of Superior Court judges -- Judge Mary K. Ames, Judge Brian A. Davis, Judge Shannon Frison, and Judge Paul D. Wilson – will share what they have learned about effective advocacy from their first year on the bench. Come learn about best practices and effective advocacy in the Superior Court from the perspective of judges who, not too long ago, were practicing attorneys themselves. The event is free and includes a networking reception. Please RSVP using the following online form:

Hon. Mary K. Ames - Before her appointment to the court in January 2013, Judge Ames had 30 years of litigation experience in both criminal and civil matters. She joined the Suffolk District Attorney's Office in 1982 as an Assistant District Attorney and became the Senior Trial Counsel and Deputy Chief of the Homicide Division. She left to begin her private practice in 1996, in which she maintained an active litigation practice that included serious felony trials as well as a wide variety of civil cases.

His practice included complex commercial disputes, torts, product liability defense, fraud and insurance litigation, and corporate governance matters. Judge Davis served as chair of Choate's Litigation Department as well as chair of the the firm's Major Commercial Litigation Practice Group.

Hon. Shannon Frison - Judge Frison served as an officer and a lawyer in the United States Marine Corp, where she handled both criminal and civil litigation assignments. Superior Court Law Clerks Society: We're Finally Here!

For years, former Superior Court law clerks have talked about forming a Law Clerk Society of the Massachusetts Superior Court. Now, we are finally on our way!

On June 1, 2010, over 80 past and present law clerks attended a seminar entitled "Massachusetts Guide to Evidence -- What You Need to Know," hosted by the Flaschner Judicial Institute and the Social Law Library. Hon. Peter W. Agnes, Jr. and Hon. David A. Lowy, both of the Superior Court, discussed what practitioners need to know about the latest issue of the Massachusetts Guide to Evidence, issued by the Supreme Judicial Advisory Committee on Massachusetts Evidence Law. The panel discussion was moderated by Appeals Court Clerk, Joseph F. Stanton, and followed opening remarks from Superior Court Chief Justice Barbara A. Rouse and Robert J. Brink, Executive Director of the Social Law Library and Executive Vice President of the Flaschner Judicial Institute.

The seminar was followed by a reception at which the participants met up with old friends, reconnected with former colleagues, and made new connections. Everyone was excited by the prospect of a Law Clerk Society for the Superior Court. Much work remains to be done and organizers announced plans for a general meeting for all interested persons to take place in mid-July.

Thanks to everyone who helped with the event, including the panelists and speakers above, as well as the organizers: Elissa Flynn-Poppey (LC '00), Mintz Levin Cohn Ferris Glovsky and Popeo PC; Joseph Stanton (LC '94-'96), Appeals Court; Jennifer Sunderland (LC '08-'09), Supreme Judicial Court; and Romeo Camba (LC '94-'96), Superior Court.
